2020 Estate Reserve Tempranillo

2020 Estate

Reserve Tempranillo

The 2020 Vintage was the first in which our team made designated “reserve” wine. While we are proud of all of our wines, we wanted to set apart the best our vineyard has to offer. The reserve wines are made from the top two barrels of each variety. Only 98 cases of the small lot production reserve Tempranillo were made. The grapes for this reserve wine were hand-harvested.

The 2020 growing season saw a relatively mild summer and a cool ripening season which allowed the fruit to retain acidity – translating into flavor and true expression of varietal character. After harvest the grapes were sent to the winery to be hand-sorted and whole-berry destemmed. The berries rested for 3 days prior to a warm fermentation. The wine was aged sur lie for 3 months followed by an additional 20 months of barrel aging in 85% new French oak and 15% well-seasoned neutral oak.

The wine opens on the nose with fresh plum, pomegranate and hints of dried fennel. The palate entry is a seamless transition from the nose aromas with the additional notes of clove, dried tobacco and toasted coconut, progressing to a lingering, smooth finish. For food pairings, wild boar carnitas and Manchego cheese balance the wine.
